Advantages of Regular Brushing
You probably know regular brushing is important to maintaining fresh breath and a brighter smile, but do you know how important it is to your health? The sugars found in most foods combine with plaque to create the perfect environment for tooth decay. Gums can become swollen and irritated, and infections can develop. Regular brushing can help reduce the risk of these potentially serious oral health problems.Regular brushing not only prevents oral health problems, however. The British Medical Journal reported in 2010 that twice-daily brushing was associated with a reduced risk of heart disease as well as C-reactive protein and fibrinogen levels, both of which are associated with cardiovascular disease. This reduction may have been due to healthier gum tissue associated with frequent brushing. Gums that are swollen and inflamed contribute to higher levels of inflammation throughout the body.
In order to maximize the benefits of frequent brushing on your health, it is important to brush properly. The American Dental Association suggests brushing a minimum of twice daily, but ideally after every meal. Teeth should be brushed about 2 minutes total with a soft bristled brush, and the brush should be replaced at least every 3 months or when the bristles begin to show signs of wear. Teeth should also be flossed at least daily to remove excess plaque.
Brushing your teeth may not prevent a heart attack, but it is an important piece of the heart health puzzle. Along with visiting your dentist regularly, regular brushing can help optimize your oral and physical health.
