Dental Bonding

Dental BondingDental bonding uses tooth-colored resin to restore or improve the cosmetic appearance of teeth. It can be used to repair chipped or cracked teeth, fill cavities, close gaps or spaces between teeth, alter the shape of teeth, and protect exposed areas of the roots.

How are teeth bonded?

Bonding does not require extensive preparation. In fact, unless a tooth is decayed and in need of a filling, anesthesia may not even be necessary. Our restorative dentist will carefully match the shade of the resin to the tooth in need of bonding. Our dentist will then roughen the surface of the tooth and apply an etching liquid in order to ensure a better bond between the resin and the tooth.

When the preparations are complete, the resin will be applied and smoothed into the proper shape, and an ultraviolet light or laser will be used to cure it. Any remaining bonding material will be trimmed and polished to match the tooth flawlessly. The entire process generally takes less than an hour per tooth, and the material will be hard as soon as the bonding procedure is complete.

Benefits of Dental Bonding

Small areas of damage or cosmetic flaws on teeth can be easily repaired with bonding rather than more extensive procedures, such as dental veneers. Bonding can also strengthen and support teeth that are heavily damaged.

Drawbacks of Dental Bonding

Dental bonding has an average lifespan of three to 10 years, depending on the area that was bonded and the person’s oral habits. Bonding materials can chip due to heavy bite pressure.
