Dental Fillings

Dental FillingsTooth decay is an extremely common problem among Americans. In fact, half of all American children have some degree of tooth decay by the time they reach the age of 12, and as many as two-thirds of low income adolescents suffer from tooth decay. Untreated tooth decay can lead to toothache, infection and abscess, and ultimately lost teeth. Dental fillings can remove the decayed portion of the tooth and restore functionality.

Dental fillings are often available as either amalgam, or metal, fillings or composite resin, or white, fillings. Amalgam fillings are effective but may not always be aesthetically appealing. Our local dentist will first remove the decayed portion of tooth. Anesthetic will eliminate any discomfort. However, if you tend to suffer from dental anxiety, you may find that sedation dentistry options may help you feel even more comfortable throughout the process.

The filling will be placed once the cavity has been cleaned and prepared. Patients should be careful with their new dental fillings for the remainder of the day to ensure they have sufficient time to harden. Amalgam fillings are highly effective in treating cavities, but they have been controversial over the past several years thanks to their mercury content. There has been no evidence that the amount of mercury in amalgam fillings is a health hazard, but many people have chosen to opt instead for white fillings.

Tooth Colored Fillings

Composite fillings are a durable dental resin that is made to match natural tooth enamel. They are extremely strong and durable, and they do not expand and contract in the same way metal fillings do. Composite fillings can also strengthen your tooth, which can be particularly beneficial if you require a large filling or repeated fillings. Unlike amalgam fillings, once the tooth colored filling is cured through a special light, it will be immediately hardened, and patients can eat and drink as usual. Composite fillings have few drawbacks, but they take longer to place.
