Dental Veneers
Teeth can become stained and discolored over time due to age, foods and beverages, tobacco use, and certain medications or medical conditions. Genetics can also affect the color of a person’s teeth. While whitening products may be able to remove minor or surface stains, other stains can be difficult or even impossible to remove through bleaching alone. Dental veneers can provide the appearance of whiter teeth and even minimize the risk of future staining. Veneers can also improve the appearance of chipped, pitted, uneven, irregular, or gapped teeth and provide an aesthetically pleasing smile.Veneers are extremely durable and are estimated to last from 10 to 15 years if properly maintained. There are two basic types of veneers: porcelain veneers and composite veneers. Both are wafer-thin shells that are cemented directly over the natural teeth and resist staining, allowing for a whiter smile as long as they are worn. Teeth will generally need to be prepared by having a small amount of enamel removed before the veneers can be applied.
Porcelain veneers are more highly resistant to staining than composite veneers and can be applied in one to two dental visits. They do not require any extra maintenance beyond proper dental hygiene. You will simply brush, floss, and visit our cosmetic dentist every six months for checkups, just as you always would. In some cases, veneers can even lead to a stronger, healthier smile and increased self-confidence as you begin to take even better care of the new smile you of which you are so proud.
Veneers may not be the best choice for every person. They can increase sensitivity or cause temporary sensitivity for those who are prone to sensitive teeth, and because some tooth enamel has to be removed, veneers must be replaced after their lifespan is over. Veneers can also become damaged, cracked, or chipped due to certain oral habits, including bruxism. If you grind your teeth, it is crucial that you wear a mouth guard to protect your new dental veneers.
